Gary BALLANCE out of the next test.

I agree there are still good players and good players can develop and learn in county cricket
But in the absence of direct tests like having Malcolm Marshall or Joel Garner bowling at you selectors have to be better than ever at looking behind the scores and judging a player
Gary Ballance will go back to county cricket and make runs but as seen he hasn't changed anything that found him out at Test level last time and this.
I see Bayliss has said they did have long discussions about Stoneman and Westley last time. I'm not sure whether those names were suggested to him or whether he mentioned them UNBIDDED.

Re: 2nd Test England v South Africa at Trent Bridge
Whilst that's true in comparison to its heyday re. Ipl and schefules, i don't think it's any coincidence that of the so called fab 4, 3 have honed their skills in county cricket (Williamson in particular talks of how it transformed him) and the only one that hasn't has been hopeless against anything moving off the straight.

As I say, I think it's a lazy cop out when selections are shit. Two years ago county cricket was being blamed for our abject world cup performance. Bayliss and Morgan are miracle workers who've turned it around.

Our top 6 in the first game of that world cup was bell, Ali, BALLANCE, root, Morgan and Taylor.

Players like hales, Roy, stokes and buttler didn't just magically appear overnight, they just weren't being picked. No different with the test side.

There was a lions game v South Africa featuring morkel, rabada and Morris. Jennings got 30 odd, opening with Sam Robson who outscored him. BALLANCE got 50... batting at 4 ffs. Tom WESTLEY batted at 3 And made an unbeaten 100. Result... Jennings gets picked, BALLANCE bats at 3. Farce.

Sangakkara is a great player but he retired from Test cricket 3 years ago and is 40 is a couple of months.
It's not a criticism it's just a fact. The level of overseas players in county cricket wasn't what it was.
Due to more international commitments, more money from IPL and their own boards etc etc

even by England cricketing standards this would be a fairly spectacular fuck up

I actually don’t mind it, Sold0. It’s miles better than it was a few years ago when they couldn’t get it off the square.

I’m less enthused now that Danni WYATT has been dropped, mind.

Excellent work from Heather KNIGHT. Runs out our best player, then gets herself out next over off a full toss

Sciver gone now as well.

Kumar SANGAKKARRA is a better player than either Border or Waugh, M

And it’s nothing new for players who make runs in county cricket not succeeding at international level, just look at Hick & Ramprakash to name but 2.
Didn’t see anyone whining about county cricket when we were number 1 in the world not long ago, and when we won 3 of the last 4 Ashes series.

It’s a cop out when selections are poor.

Re: 2nd Test England v South Africa at Trent Bridge
The standard isn't what it was is it .... just look who is leading it

The Test players hardly play and the standard of international player is way down
Chris Rogers , Maxy Klinger, Adam Voges and others were/are playing in it into their 40's.
Not quite Allan Border or Mark Waugh is it

stewie griffin 2:54 Tue Jul 18
Re: 2nd Test England v South Africa at Trent Bridge
nothing wrong with county cricket

Produced Cook, Root, Kane WILLIAMSON, even that tubby lesbian Steve SMITH had a stint.

Same as Morgan and Bayliss being credited with our white ball turnaround. It's a nonsense, the players were always there, they just weren't being picked. No different with the test side. Selection is the problem.

Sven Roeder 2:47 Tue Jul 18
Re: 2nd Test England v South Africa at Trent Bridge
The greed that has led to too much international cricket hasn't done the county game any good.
Test players play once in a blue moon and because of money opportunities elsewhere the top class international players don't play it.
Used to be Viv Richards, Barry Richards, Joel Garner etc and now it's Neil Wagner and other fringe players.

I modelled my bowling on Freddie Truman, coached by Essex stalwart Gordon Barker at Trevor Bailey's cricket school in Gants Hill

Could not agree more... County Cricket used to harden the players for Test matches.... what was it called ... A lot of hard yakka?? Now it's a few poncey 20/20... a 50 over chucked in.. and then whacked onto the test arena... imagine Fred Trueman doing that...

Eerie
You will have to remind me what I said about Bayliss
I'd agree he was probably happy after his Sri Lanka time just looking after NSW which is quite a nice Sydney based gig and had to.persuaded with lots of money
He HAS won the Ashes and in SA of course but obviously was able to negotiate not having to slog around county grounds which I agree shows a half hearted attitude
I agree England should have gone with Gillespie who would be far more energetic and obviously has a hands on county knowledge

I expect he or Justin Langer will be the next Aust coach so could you please hang on to Trevvy for a bit longer please until we get that done.

Hameed will be back, but averaging less than 20 in the county championship. Woefully out of form

Spot on west side

How many domestic games have Anderson and broad played in the last 5 years I wonder?

In a side note, what happened to that hameed kid that opened a year or so back?

Re: 2nd Test England v South Africa at Trent Bridge
JAKD " I imagine he's relied on having a mustard eye which is finding him out against these bowlers."

That is the problem. County cricket bowling is pretty rubbish. Best English bowlers hardly play, because of central contracts. Not many decent overseas pace bowlers, counties seem to favour overseas batters, or spinners, rather than fast bowlers.

So when your bucket load of runs county players, gets called up for tests, they face someone half decent and struggle.
